The Man Behind The Mic and Drum

In the heart of Zola, Soweto, a voice is reshaping the sound of township storytelling. Bopha Blackman AFM is not just another rapper emerging from the bottomless pit where all dope comes from. But he is a drummer, and a pioneering voice in Kasi Rap.

“I am not just a rapper,” Bopha Blackman says. “I am a movement…a drum beating storyteller from the heart of Zola, Soweto.”

His sound carries a name of its own: Spharaphara. It is a fusion of Kasi Rap and African rhythms, a deliberate blend of the street and the ancestral.

The music speaks of struggle without glorifying it, celebrates identity without performing it, and moves with the rhythmic intelligence of someone who understands that rapping and drumming are the original language of this land.

There’s more. He is also versatile session drummer whose command of the kit spans genres — from the swing of Jazz to the scream of Rock, and everything in between.

Whether he is locking into a walking bass line behind a horn section or driving a rock anthem with crashing cymbals, his feel is unmistakable. This versatility makes him not just a rapper who plays drums, but a complete musician whose understanding of groove informs every bar he writes.

Born and raised in Zola, Bopha’s journey has always been rooted in the community that shaped him. From garage sessions with music peers, to festivals with OGs, his path has been one of steady, intentional growth. His lyrics carry the weight of ekasi life — the daily hustle, the moments of joy, the weight of survival, and the quiet pride of those who keep going when no one is watching.

He is also the founder of Black Bhubesi Productions, a 100% independent platform he established to create space for artists like himself. The company is his vision, his commitment, his legacy in the making.

Black Bhubesi Productions provides:

Now, after months of creative dedication, Bopha is stepping into the spotlight with his debut EP, Hola Kau. The project has already attracted institutional support, receiving both the SAMRO Music Creation Fund for production and the Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) grant for marketing and promotion. It is a testament not only to his artistic capability, but brand credibility.

Bopha Blackman AFM stands at the threshold of something larger than himself. He carries the hopes of Zola, the rhythm of the drums, and a sound that refuses to be boxed in.

“Hola Kau is more than an EP — it’s a reflection of where I come from, who I am, and how I see the sound of the streets evolving.”-Bopha Blackman AFM
